Champaign-Urbana MTD Purchases Two Hydrogen Buses

The Champaign-Urbana Illinois Mass Transit District (MTD), has ordered two hydrogen fuel cell buses from New Flyer of America. The contract calls for New Flyer to supply two hydrogen fuel cell electric sixty-foot Xcelsior CHARGE H2™ heavy duty transit buses in the Champaign, Urbana and Savoy regions of the state. The Xcelsior CHARGE H2™ bus is a battery electric vehicle that uses compressed hydrogen as an energy source, along with Ballard Power Systems fuel cell technology.

Infertile Cancer Survivor Gives Birth Using Frozen, Lab-Matured Egg in Scientific ‘Breakthrough’

In a world first, a French woman has given birth after freezing, thawing and fertilizing her immature eggs in a procedure called in vitro maturation, according to a study published in the journal Annals of Oncology. Doctors say this development "is particularly important for cancer patients, but it’s also a step towards easier and less invasive IVF for other women and couples needing assisted reproduction."

Quantum Design and Sumitomo Cryogenics of America Announce Collaboration with Helium Compressor

Developed jointly by Quantum Design and SHI Cryogenics (CSA CSMs), the new R-98 double inverter-driven helium compressor, the first in SHI’s new Revolution™ Series, is compatible with a range of their Gifford-McMahon and Pulse Tube two-stage cryocoolers. It represents the latest in “energy smart” helium compressors that reduce the operating costs of cryogenically cooled instrumentation. Its variable speed operation is not only energy efficient, but also reduces servicing requirements of traditional single-speed compressors.

Grand Opening Soon: ITER’s Cryostat Base

The first cryostat is being installed at the ITER Tokamak pit for the French fusion project at Saint-Paul-les-Durance. The cryostat base, part of the insulating vessel that encases the ITER Tokamak, is the heaviest of all the machine's components. As the first of four cryostat sections to be lowered into the Tokamak pit, it must be aligned with utmost precision, as any departure from its nominal positioning would affect the entire structure of the 30-meter-tall cryostat.

Closely Spaced Hydrogen Atoms Could Facilitate Superconductivity in Ambient Conditions

An international team of researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (CSA CSM) has discovered the hydrogen atoms in a metal hydride material are much more tightly spaced than had been predicted for decades—a feature that could possibly facilitate superconductivity at or near room temperature and pressure. Such a superconducting material would revolutionize energy efficiency in a broad range of consumer and industrial applications.

New Coronavirus Protein Identified by Team Including Argonne National Laboratory May Lead to Drug Target

A potential drug target has been identified in a newly mapped protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The structure was solved by a team including the University of Chicago, the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory (CSA CSM), Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine. The group said their findings suggest drugs that had previously been in development to treat the earlier SARS outbreak could now be developed as effective drugs against COVID-19.

The Hyper-Kamiokande Project Is Officially Approved

Hyper-K, a world-leading international scientific research project hosted by Japan, aims to elucidate the origin of matter and the Grand Unified Theory of elementary particles. The project consists of the Hyper-K detector, which has an 8.4 times larger fiducial mass than its predecessor, Super-Kamiokande, and will be equipped with newly developed high sensitivity photosensors and a high intensity neutrino beam produced by an upgraded Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) accelerator facility.

First Instrument Delivered for Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer

The first instrument to fly on ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer, or "Juice," has been delivered for integration onto the spacecraft this month. Juice is the first large-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015–2025 program. With launch scheduled in 2022, it will arrive at Jupiter in 2029 to perform detailed observations of the giant planet and three of its largest moons: Ganymede, Callisto and Europa.

SpaceX’s Starship SN1 Explodes Under Cryogenic Testing

The SN1 was undergoing liquid nitrogen (LN) testing when clouds of vapor appeared underneath. A split-second later, the system exploded, lifting the whole craft a few meters into the air. The stainless steel LN tank rapidly imploded and released more vapor from the top of the craft. No fire was reported. The test comes after a similar structural failure during the testing of the Starship MK1 in November of 2019.
